Meet Captain Joseph Dunaway

I am a Surfside Beach native. Fishing has always been my passion. I have been fishing since the age of 4 (since I could hold a rod). During my juvenile years, I spent most of my days fishing for Bream, Largemouth Bass, and Catfish.

The older I became, the more drawn I was to the ocean. By age 12, my father was taking my family fishing out of Murrell’s Inlet. We would mainly fish for King Mackerel, and anchor up on the inshore reefs and catch large Amberjacks, Sharks and Black Sea Bass. Most of the time, we practiced “Catch and Release”.

When I was around 15 years old, we mainly started King Mackerel fishing. We also began fishing many King Mackerel tournaments. This is still one of my favorite species to fish for. In my early twenties, I became a professional captain. For the past 12 years, I have traveled and fished from the Panhandle of Florida all the way to Massachusetts and also the Bahamas.

Throughout my travels I have learned many techniques and met a lot of interesting people, while fishing for Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Dolphin (Dorado), Yellow Fin Tuna, Blue Fin Tuna, Wahoo, and King Mackerel. Most of these species frequent the South Carolina waters off of Murrell’s Inlet. Being a father of three children, I enjoy sharing all I can with families and making their fishing experience informative and enjoyable.
